Cynthia

Cynthia is regarded by many to be the queen of freestyle music. She has put out numerous dance tracks that have become freestyle classics. Cynthia entered the music industry at the perfect time when Latin Hip-Hop was the main music genre on the airwaves and receiving lots of radio play. She is one of the most popular freestyle singers in the industry, and her music will always be loved amongst freestyle fans. In 2001, Thumps Records released a “Cynthia’s greatest hits” album.

Top songs from Cynthia

Cynthia released her self titled album “Cynthia” in 1990 under Micmac Records. From this album would come her first hit “Change on me.” Cynthia was only 17 years old when this song was released as a single in 1988. “Change on me” made its way to #37 on the U.S. Dance Chart. Even though it did not make the U.S. Billboard Top 100, many fans (including me) feel it should have. “Change on me” is an all-time freestyle classic and should have charted much higher than it did. With that said, it also should have charted much higher on the U.S. Dance Chart.

From the “Cynthia” album, a couple of other dance club hits would be recorded and released in 1988-1989. Both “Endless nights” and “Thief of hearts” became two very popular dance songs. These two songs, including “Change on me” were all top selling singles. From this album, Cynthia would establish herself as one of the top freestyle acts in the business.

In 1990, “Dream boy / Dream girl” would be released. In this song, Cynthia collaborated with fellow freestyle artist Johnny O. The song went gold and made its way to #53 on the U.S. billboard. This song would be included in the 1991 record titled “Cynthia II.” Most Latin Hip-Hop fans consider “Dream boy / Dream girl” to be the greatest freestyle duet of all time.

From the Cynthia II album would also come “What will it take.” This became another Cynthia dance song favorite. Then there was “Make up to break up.” This song was a cover of the beautiful 1972 Stylistics love ballad. Cynthia performed the song well and it made it to #70 on the U.S. Chart.

During the next couple of years, Cynthia would release more dance hits such as “Love me tonight,” ” Everytime I look at you” and “Forever missing you.” None of these songs charted, but Cynthia fans were sure glad she was giving them fresh new music to dance to.

From 1994 to 1999 Cynthia recorded new music under a new label. Her album “Thinking about you” was released in 1999, but most of the music from the album had already been released as singles during previous years. “How I love him” was released in 1994 and was very successful as it made it #107 on the U.S. Chart, it became a dance club favorite making it to #15 on the U.S. Dance Chart. In 1997, “Like a star” was another dance club hit making it to #28 on the U.S. Dance Chart.

In 1998, “If I had the chance” was released and surprisingly only made it to #83 on the U.S. Billboard Chart. This fan favorite gave freestyle fans a vibe that they hadn’t had for a while. With freestyle music no longer mainstream and taking a back seat to rap / hip hop, which was now mainstream, Cynthia seemed to have revived freestyle.

In New York, the radio station KTU 103.5 would have their top 8 at 8. For a whole month straight, “If I had a chance” was the #1 song. Unfortunately at this point, record producers, record labels and radio stations seemed to have already made up their mind in which direction they wanted music to go, and freestyle music was not it. From the “Thinking about you” album, Cynthia would also find dance club success with ” Thinking about you” and “I never said.”

In 2005, Cynthia recorded a song with fellow freestyle artist Lisette Melendez called “I can’t change your mind.” In 2016, she released a single called “Starlight” that had a much different type of sound than what fans were used of. In 2021, Cynthia released a song called “Are you ready for love” which went back to the freestyle sound that fans are used of. Today, Cynthia continues to tour and is frequently part of freestyle concerts which feature various freestyle artists.
